
Intro to Woodcarving:
The Basic Spoon

from 12:00 to 4:00 pm
In this hands-on spoon-making workshop, students will explore the art of carving with basswood. Under expert guidance, participants will learn to shape and refine their own unique spoon using essential hand tools such as sloyd knives, hook knives, and coping saws. Whether you’re a complete beginner or looking to expand your carving skills, this class offers a rewarding experience—working with quality materials and tools to create something both functional and beautiful.
Class Outline / Steps
I. Start of Class Activities
A. Welcome and introductions (Instructor, Assistant, and Participants)
B. Overview of tools and materials to be used
II. Workshop Steps
A. Participants trace spoon templates onto wood.
B. Instructor demonstration:
How to properly clamp the wood onto the bench
Setting up and using a coping saw
Cutting out the spoon shape with the coping saw
C. Participants complete the above steps.
D. Instructor demonstration:
1. Proper hand position and cutting form with the hook knife
2. Safety guidelines for using the hook knife
E. Participants carve out the bowl of their spoons.
F. 10-minute break
G. Instructor demonstration:
1. Proper hand position and cutting form with the sloyd knife
2. Understanding grain orientation and safety techniques
H. Participants continue carving, sanding, and applying finish to their spoons.
I. Closing: Group photo of participants and their finished spoons.
