WASTE LAND (2010): In this award-winning documentary, renowned artist Vik Muniz embarks on one of the most inspired collaborations of his career, traveling from his home in Brooklyn to his native Brazil to join creative forces with garbage pickers. The garbage pickers, or catadores, mine recyclable treasures from the trash heaps of Rio de Janeiro’s Jardim Gramacho landfill, the world’s largest garbage dump. Muniz’s initial objective is to “paint” the catadores with garbage. But he quickly reconsiders as these inspiring people create photographic images of themselves out of garbage, revealing both their dignity and despair as they begin to re-imagine their lives.
