SUMMARY:CELEBRATE PETE SEEGER'S BIRTHDAY with Betty and the Baby Boomers
DESCRIPTION:Pete would have been 99 on May 3; the Boomers will mark his birthday singing his songs and others in keeping with his legacy. \n“And when these fingers can strum no longer/hand your banjo to young ones stronger” sang Pete Seeger\, and the Boomers are among those to whom his music was handed down. They worked for Clearwater\, joined Pete in performance\, and – after his passing in 2014 – sang in concerts honoring his memory at Lincoln Center in Manhattan and at Poughkeepsie’s Bardavon Opera House. The musical handoff went both ways: Pete regularly performed one of the Boomers’ signature songs\, “Down By the River\,” written by group member Jean Valla McAvoy\, and recorded it on his Grammy-winning album Tomorrow’s Children with the Rivertown Kids. \nBetty and the Baby Boomers … “sing and play old-school folk like it was brand spanking new.” (Kingston Daily Freeman); “a refreshing reminder of the halcyon days of American folk music” (Sing Out!) \n \nPhoto by: Bernhard Sanders \n

SUMMARY:BRUCE PILEGGI OPENING - Wine and Cheese Reception
DESCRIPTION:Meet the artist\, Bruce Pileggi at our opening reception. Wine and cheese will be available. \nBruce Pileggi received his BFA from SUNY New Paltz in 1971. Pileggi’s work modulates between the abstract and the representational\, but is always anchored in exploring the relationship between shape\, color and line. This relationship can at times feel isolated and solitary\, even austere\, but there is an undercurrent of energetic movement and vibrancy that connects the pieces back to a larger narrative about our place as artists in society. His pieces solicit the viewer to engage and question art in society as well; one asks… is this art or decoration\, landscape or abstraction. \n

SUMMARY:BRUCE PILEGGI - Recent Work
DESCRIPTION: \nArtists Statement: \nI’ve always felt that art and the making of art are part of a conversation the artist has with himself and the world. In this way the artist offers to the world his ideas\, his thoughts and his feelings\, creating a dialogue\, a give and take\, a comparing of notes. But to what end? \nBack when I was a student I read a book by Gregory Bateson: Steps to an Ecology of Mind\, in it he states that “art is to keep life from being too purposive.” This makes sense to me: art as process and not product. Therefore\, rather than trying to arrive at some point of accomplishment\, some achievement\, some conclusion\, I just want to enjoy the journey of creating… wherever it may lead me. \n \n \n
