Weaving traditional music, ancient Spanish texts and Mexican legends with contemporary dance, Postcards of Mexico [creates] a landscape of Mexico in a breath-catching collage of past and present.
— San Francisco Weekly
Woodstock-based DANCE MONKS blend acrobatics, modern dance and tai chi into a colorful, visually exciting, yet deeply reverential form of contemporary dance. This evening's performance will feature a multi-media installation and performance in celebration of the Mexican Day of the Dead. The performance includes projected images by photographer Sebastian Belaustegui, author of Guardianes del Tiempo (The Guardians of Time).
DANCE MONKS are Rodrigo Esteva a leading Mexican choreographer and Mirah Moriarty, who trained for the US Junior Olympics Gymnastics Team. They have taught and performed throughout the United States, Mexico and abroad at The Joyce Theater (NY), The Kennedy Center (DC), The Lincoln Center Out-of Doors (NY), The Flynn Center for the Performing Arts (VT), The National University of Mexico (DF), among many others.
Stick around after the Dance Monks performance of "Postcards from Mexico" for a Mexican themed party with traditional home-cooked Mexican delicacies and drink. Live music will be provided by Radio Jarocho, a NYC-based band devoted to the son jarocho and fandango traditions from southern Veracruz, Mexico. Unison's favorite DJ, Johnny Witter will also be providing dance music.
Food generously provided by Main Street Bistro, Tuthill House at the Mill, The Mountain Brauhaus and Bridge Creek Catering.
We want to give a special thanks to the Mexican Cultural Institute of NY for their support in making this event possible.
