Karen Capobianco is a Photographer residing in New Paltz, She has received her BFA from Rhode Island School of Design and her Masters in the Visual Research Lab at SUNY New Paltz. Karen's work focuses on what she calls the internal voice of nature. The work is based on her strong interest in ecology and the environment.
"My concern is how we tread on this earth and the resulting impact it has left in our wake. I am struck by the blatant destruction and noticeable changes that we accept readily, with out thought. Nature protests are a silent voice to our ears. We can close our eyes to visual changes as we rush by and remain encased in our artificially fabricated environments. The photos are a way of stopping looking and hearing what nature has to say. This series Calligraphy began in the aftermath of Katrina as the storm moved up through the Catskills. I began to shoot the flooded river and was stuck by the polarity and duality — the reflections, both metaphoric and real. I saw an order in the chaos, the geometry and line. I was struck by the haunting beauty of nature and its strength even in the wake of its destruction. I continue to shoot images that show the beauty in the decay, breakdown, aftermath and renewal. I pause to see the intricate structures of plants as they decompose as well as the opportunistic growth of some species where others decline. I am always stuck with the shear beauty of it all and it renews my soul in a way nothing else can. The photos are my way of sharing what I believe is a the gifts the earth offers us all each time I pause to hear and see it."
