"In my life I have had three near death drowning experiences. When I came to the United States to do graduate studies at SUNY New Paltz I made a decision to leave the work I had been doing in Korea behind. I searched for new subject matter and found it. My work is based on my biographical experience in my fear of drowning. I consciously decided to paint and draw ships, jellyfish, and other marine animals, things that can survive in water. I made them to stand in as self portraits. I am a deeply committed Buddhist. If my family had allowed me, I would have chosen to become a Buddhist monk. Although that path was closed off to me, a famous monk I consulted in Korea told me that art-making was a form of devotion for me, a path of meditation as legitimate as pure meditation."
