David Starobin
A Tribute to Guitar Maker Thomas Humphrey (1949-2008)

"I first got to know Tom (Humphrey) in the late 70s. A student of mine brought in one of his guitars and I knew at once that the instrument had something 'special' about it. Tom's instruments always had strong personality, and the more of them I played over the years, the more I came to admire how much of himself he put into those magical wooden boxes. I was perhaps closest to Tom in the mid-80s, the years when Tom came up with the guitar design that he will forever be remembered for — his "Millenium" guitar. A few years later Tom met Marta, and you could see a great change come into his life. Tom had found his soulmate. I remember his pride when he showed me the first guitars with Marta's initials inscribed on 'their' label." David Starobin

"For originality and breadth, Starobin's program was a thing of beauty." The New York Times

The accolades have only grown more reverent for David Starobin - "Soundboard" magazine called him "arguably the most influential American classical guitarist of the twentieth century." Composers including Elliott Carter, George Crumb, Poul Ruders, Gunther Schuller and Milton Babbitt have dedicated new works to him, and Starobin has performed these works with The New York Philharmonic, National Symphony, San Francisco Symphony, St. Louis Symphony, Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, Emerson Quartet, Copenhagen Radio Orchestra and Odense Symphony Orchestra. His CD "Newdance" received a Grammy nomination and won the Association for Independent Music's "Indie Award" for best classical CD. Among his many honors are a Harvard University Fromm Grant for "his commitment to the music of our time," a Lincoln Center Avery Fisher Grant and Peabody Conservatory's "Distinguished Alumni Award."
