Chekhov Mini-Festival
A two week-end event celebrating the masterworks of Anton Chekhov.

June 20 & 21 — The Three Sisters

Love lies deep and untapped in the Prozorov girls, until a garrison arrives in their remote town. Can the newcomers bring the sisters the happiness they crave?

In this, his third adaptation of a Chekhov play, Pulitzer PrizeÐwinning author David Mamet offers a contemporary, highly accessible version of Chekhov's The Three Sisters. Working from a literal translation by Vlada Chernomordik, Mamet has rediscovered the characteristically modern chords in this powerful play and breathes new life into a timeless classic. This is Chekhov rendered in direct, colloquial language marked by Mamet's finely tuned ear for dialogue.

June 27 & 28 — 2 Short Plays

On The Harmful Effects of Tobacco

Chekhov originally wrote On The Harmful Effects of Tobacco in 1886 and during the next six years, he re-wrote it half a dozen times. The monologue ranges from comic to tragic as Ivan Ivanovitch Nyukhin delivers a lecture on the harmfulness of tobacco at the request, in a manner of speaking, of his wife.

A Reluctant Tragic Hero

In A Reluctant Tragic Hero, our hero spends the summer in the country, but is driven to the brink of distraction by various demands to run errands in the city and bring back lots of odd items to the country with him.
