"Led by some truly great singing... this Alaska-based quintet manages to sound both fresh and polished." Country Music Today
Hailing from Anchorage Alaska, Bearfoot is rising fast on the acoustic music scene. The band features three-part vocal harmony, solid rhythm and soloing on mandolin and guitar, twin fiddles, and acoustic bass. Their repertoire ranges from the band's original songs to fast-paced instrumentals to arrangements of traditional tunes evoking the high lonesome sounds of Bill Monroe. Bearfoot has toured extensively, playing concerts and festivals in the US, Canada and Ireland. In 2001 they won the Telluride Bluegrass Festival Band Competition, joining such other notable winners as The Dixie Chicks and Nickel Creek, to whom they have been compared for their fresh new sound. The band was the idea of Belle Mickelson, director of the Cordova, Alaska Music Camp, and the band members were all campers. With parents booking gigs and a multitude of donated air mile tickets, Bearfoot played throughout the Northwest and Alaska, culminating in their spectacular win in Telluride. Kate Hamre, acoustic bass; Mike Mickelson, guitar, Jason Norris, mandolin; Angela Oudean and Annalisa Tornfelt on fiddle, and they all sing.
