Students will create and fire their own Raku clay pieces. The first week, students will watch a slide lecture on Raku pottery and learn to make vessels for Raku firing. The following week they will glaze their work and fire it in a Raku kiln. You will be introduced to the techniques of horse hair and ferric-chloride fuming with horse hair. In ferric-chloride fuming, which produces extraordinary yellows, oranges, reds and rust colors on the surfaces of the pots.
Bill Shillalies received his MFA from Hunter College and teaches at Nassau Community College in Garden City, NY. He has worked in clay for over 25 years and shows his work nationally.
